Shiva Tandav in English Meaning
- Lord Shiva, whose matted hair is purified by the flow of the Ganges, who wears a great serpent as a garland, and who performs the fierce Tandava dance to the beat of the Damru—may He bless us.
- I find delight in Shiva, who wears the crescent moon on His head, where the celestial river’s waves frolic, and whose forehead glows with fire.
- May my mind find bliss in the Supreme Being who is the consort of the daughter of the Mountain King, whose mind is delighted by the universe, and whose compassionate glance stops all troubles.
- May my mind find wonder in the Lord of all beings, who is adorned by the red saffron-like glow of the jewels on the serpent’s hood and wears an elephant-hide cloak.
- May Shiva, the friend of the Chakora bird (the Moon), who is worshiped by all gods including Indra and whose matted hair is bound by the King of Serpents, bring us eternal prosperity.
- May we obtain the wealth of the matted hair of Shiva, who destroyed the god of love (Kama) with the fire from His forehead and who is bowed to by the leaders of the gods.
- My interest lies in the Three-Eyed Lord who offered the five arrows of Kama into the fire on His forehead and who is the sole artist capable of painting on the daughter of the Mountain.
- May the Lord who carries the weight of the universe, whose neck is dark like a midnight cloud in the new moon, and who holds the holy river, grant us prosperity.
- I worship the Destroyer of the cities (Tripura), the Destroyer of mundane existence, the Destroyer of the sacrifice (of Daksha), the Destroyer of the elephant-demon, and the Destroyer of Death itself.
- I worship the Slayer of Kama, who is like a bee buzzing around the sweet nectar of the blossoms of all-auspicious arts.
- Victory to Shiva, whose dance is accompanied by the rhythmic sound of the Mridanga and the fire of His breath as His serpents hiss while He performs the Tandava.
- When will I worship Lord Sadashiva with an equal eye toward a snake and a garland, a gem and a clod of earth, a friend and an enemy, or a king and his subjects?
- When will I live in a cave near the Ganges, free from evil thoughts, with hands folded over my head, chanting “Shiva” and finding eternal happiness?
- Anyone who regularly recites and remembers this supreme hymn attains purity and deep devotion to Shiva. Contemplating Shankara is the only way to end the delusions of life.
